Laayoune university’s Hospital is a 75 000 m² providing 800 beds for the southern population. Located in a newly urbanized, close to the popular river Sakia El Hamra, our proposal can be seen as a monolithic compact bloc with different identifiable volumes.
A unified base gathers all the different poles, separated by distinct patios, bringing light inside the spaces, and creating naturally-ventilated open corridors. This healing garden design with a focus on patient and medical crew experience, incorporates a number of gardens from the roof to the ground to connect indoor and outdoor spaces with a sustainable environment.
The four main flows are structured (the patients, the medical crew, the visitors and logistical) in order to optimize connectivity to each other, while the patient unit towers are designed to sit on top and be easily connected to all departments underneath.
The patient unit towers are North East Orientated to avoid the rooms’ overheating and offer the necessary thermic comfort. The ocher and beige colours allow an immediate visual effect of timelessness and contextuality, allowing a minimalist building to smoothly incorporate to the landscape.
